چکیده

We investigated the hibernation ecology and cold hardiness of hatchling diamondback terrapins, Malaclemys terrapin (Schoepf, 1793), an estuarine species that reaches 42°N along the Atlantic Ocean. During 3 years of study, about 50% of the nests we monitored harboured hatchlings during winter, and the majority (87%) of these individuals survived despite being intermittently exposed to subfreezing temperatures. Most such exposures were brief (ca. 12 h) and mild (minimum temperature: ca. –1.2 °C); however, turtles were occasionally subjected to longer chilling episodes and lower temperatures. In laboratory experiments, hatchlings supercooled extensively, attaining ca. –15 °C before spontaneously freezing. However, they were highly susceptible to inoculative freezing through contact with external ice and (or) ice-nucleating agents, which occur in nesting soil. Therefore, freeze avoidance through supercooling does not appear to be a viable cold-hardiness strategy in these turtles. Hatchlings subjected to experimental freezing survived exposure to temperatures as low as –3.0 °C, suggesting that freeze tolerance may account for the high winter survival observed in natural nests. We conclude that freeze tolerance in hatchling M. terrapin is promoted by high susceptibility to inoculation, which is known to moderate freezing, allowing cells time to adapt to the attendant physical and osmotic

Temperature-dependent aromatase expression in developing diamondback terrapin (Malaclemys terrapin) embryos.

In the diamondback terrapin, Malaclemys terrapin, males hatch at incubation temperatures below 28 degrees C whereas females hatch at temperatures above 30 degrees C. When estrogen is applied to the eggs at male temperatures early in development, females are produced. These data suggest that the enzyme necessary for estrogen synthesis (CYP19, aromatase) in the developing gonad plays a critical r...

Field Surveys and Experimental Transmission of Pleurogonius malaclemys (Digenea: Pronocephalidae), an Intestinal Parasite of the Diamondback Terrapin Malaclemys terrapin.

:  Life history stages of Pleurogonius malaclemys were investigated in wild populations of the eastern mudsnail ( Ilyanassa obsoleta ) and diamondback terrapin ( Malaclemys terrapin ) in New Jersey, New York, and Rhode Island between 2011 and 2015, and laboratory experiments investigating the settling preference of metacercarial cysts of P. malaclemys were conducted. Cysts of P. malaclemys were...

First Fossil Record for the Diamondback Terrapin, Malaclemys Terrapin (emydidae), and Comments on the Fossil Record of Chrysemys Nelsoni (emydidae)

A nuchal bone and a first left costal bone from two different individuals represent the first fossil record for the diamondback terrapin, Malaclemys terrapin. The bones are from a Pleistocene deposit at Edisto Beach, Colleton County, South Carolina, a locality that is within the present range of M. terrapin. Fossil Chrysemys nelsoni recovered from the same deposit indicate that the ranges of Ch...

Diamondback Terrapin Mortality in the American Eel Pot Fishery and Evaluation of a Bycatch Reduction Device

The effect of commercial fisheries on nontarget species is a burgeoning issue for both fishery managers and estuarine biologists. We documented diamondback terrapin (Malaclemys terrapin) bycatch in cloth-funnel eel pots used in a Maryland (United States) commercial American eel (Anguilla rostrata) fishery. Between 1992 and 2001, we obtained 40 male and 9 female terrapin captures and 1 male terr...

Osmoregulation in the diamondback terrapin, Malaclemys terrapin centrata.

Survival of vertebrates in hypertonic environments such as the sea is opposed by diffusional loss of water and gain of sodium, and is aided by physical barriers to such diffusion along with the ability to transport ions actively. The energy expenditure for active transport obviously must be related to the efficiency of the physical barriers that impede diffusion. The description of these proces...
